Dominic - With passport in hand, I was ready for the trek to "Sarf London" and the Indian Gourmet. And after a brief visit to the boozer, it was off to this moderately sized, modern eatery. Service was pretty good all evening and the place was quite busy indicating its popularity. As it turned out, I mirrored what Jon had chosen from the last visit so opted for the Garlic Lemon Scallops as my starter. They were large, juicy and almost creamy and would have received a "10" but for the slightly odd sauce that accompanied them. For main I chose a "turned up" Lal Maas being a vindaloo+ strength lamb dish. However, this was reasonably ordinary, well, to my palette at least. Indeed, the rest was fairly ordinary but having said that, no commentary could be made on the mushrooms as I didn't get to have any - you know who you are with your seconds! So with a £50 per head price tag even those scallops on their own couldn't justify a decent VFM score despite high expectations. Nevertheless, another great evening of conversation, merriment and the usual rubbish we discuss!
Graeme - My two main comments about this place are: 1. the service was absolutely top class, and 2. it was expensive. The menu was refreshingly different to the norm, with quite a few seafood dishes and not many of the usual 'standards'. Unfortunately, my starter and main were disappointing. My Squid Pepper Fry starter was dry and boring. And my Palak Prawn (effectively Prawn Sag) main course was too wet and therefore bland. I acknowledge that my menu choices were poor but I have to mark based on my own meal. I wish I had chosen the scallops starter. Dom very kindly gave me one of his three scallops - it was lovely. This was by no means a bad place but it didn't really work for me on the night.
Jon - A pleasant evening in very nice surroundings with the main down side being my choice of main course. Having enjoyed the scallop starter on our last visit, I decided to try the main course this time but it didn't really work for me. The Tawa Lamb starter, however, was excellent. Only one beer option and no special rice was disappointing and it was definitely on the pricey side. Still a great night, though!
Richard - Nice to have scallops as a starter for a change, and they were well executed. The main of Karahi Gohst was good, and the naan and rice were good. In summary, all very good, nothing great for me. I'd be very happy to return however.
Jeff - Borough is a busy but relaxed area just south of the river, with a different atmosphere from the City and Brick Lane. The Kings Head is a great boozer, smallish, busy with a wide mix of people and the football on with no sound. The Indian Gourmet was also quite small, and quite busy, though from memory there were a few empty tables. Excellent service from the waitress who knew her menu, and whose recommendations I happily accepted for both starter and main - both were lamb-based, tender and well-spiced. Accompaniments weren't quite to the same standard, but overall the meal was very good. Still a really poor choice of beer though, just Cobra and other non-Indian beers. Price, at £50, shows what happens when you get no discounts of any sort. I'd be happy to return.
